Owning a big home feels great – that is, until cleaning day comes around. Whether you’re in a large Dundas property surrounded by trees or a spacious family home in Flamborough, keeping it tidy can quickly turn into a seemingly never-ending week-long project.
The good news is that, with a few smart habits, you can keep even the biggest home feeling fresh without spending every spare minute scrubbing.
Here are five simple tricks that actually work in real life for real people. (And I know because I’ve tried them!)
#1 Break it down by zones
Instead of trying to clean everything in one go, split your home into manageable zones. These could include ‘kitchen and dining’, ‘bedrooms’, ‘bathrooms’, and ‘living areas’.
I suggest focusing on one zone per day or per week, depending on your schedule. This keeps cleaning from feeling overwhelming and makes sure no area gets forgotten for too long. And stick to the ‘10-minute tidy’ rule – more on that below.
The Little Mop suggests: Make a checklist for each zone so you can quickly track what’s been done and what still needs attention.
#2 Stick to the ‘10-minute tidy’ rule
Set a timer for ten minutes each day (morning or evening) and do a quick tidy-up in one part of the house. For me, it works best in the evening. We all do the dishes or load the dishwasher at night, and it’s not much of a leap to add a quick cleaning or tidying routine to that.
You’d be amazed at how much difference a focused ten minutes can make. And if you have a couple of kids that you can persuade to join in, you can really get quite a lot done.
Your ‘10-minute tidy’ sessions could focus on anything, but here are a couple of the most important suggestions:
- A speed vacuum through the main walkways
- Clearing surfaces in the kitchen
- Folding throw blankets and straightening cushions
- Dusting down the walls
- Cleaning showers or toilets
When you’re doing your ten-minute sessions, remember: the secret isn’t deep cleaning. Not right now, at least. Your only focus here is staying ahead of the clutter. And doing that makes deep cleaning much easier when the time comes.
#3 Invest in smart storage and furniture options
I’m sure you’ve seen those satisfying videos on social media or YouTube – tables that fold out as if by magic, soft-close shoe compartments, and sofa-beds that look as comfortable as the real thing.
Well, large houses come with lots of storage potential. And the funny thing is that because the rooms are large, people tend to get big furniture to fill them. Otherwise it would look empty, right?
Fair enough. But you can still optimize where you keep everything with smart storage. For instance, even though we don’t live in a particularly large home, we have a desk that folds down into a Murphy bed. That instantly saves almost an entire room’s worth of needed space!
Invest in whatever your home needs. Whether that’s baskets, bins, labelled drawers, under-couch storage, or even some fancy contraption tailor-made for you, it could really make all the difference. As long as the things you use daily are easy to reach, and seasonal things are stored effectively in closets, the basement, or the garage, you’ll find there’s far less clutter to manage.
#4 Keep cleaning supplies on every floor
Here’s an important one that often gets overlooked. If you’ve got more than one level, save yourself the up-and-down trips by keeping basic supplies in each area – for example, that might include a vacuum, microfibre cloths, all-purpose spray, and paper towels.
Having what you need nearby makes it easier to do quick spot cleans when you notice something, preventing small messes from turning into weekend projects.
#5 Get a helping hand when you need it
Even with the best routines, it takes a lot of time to care for big homes in southern Ontario. That’s where hiring a professional cleaner can make all the difference. A local cleaning service like The Little Mop is arguably the best way to stay on top of the details.
